Deep Forest: Poems by Jessica Tremblay inspired by "Emily Carr: Navigating an Impenetrable Landscape" exhibit at Vancouver Art Gallery

1.

Mountain forest --
my watch rubs
against a mosquito bite.

2.

The little pine
in the shadow
of bigger things.

3.

Among the trees
just
another tree.

4.

A young tree
taller than
mountain peaks.

5.

Old time coast village --
the boat
that never left.

6.

Old and new forest --
he offers to carry
my backpack.

7.

A rushing sea of undergrowth --
my sandal,
gone.

8.

Cedar --
an ant
in the picnic basket.

9.

Forest --
everything
is nothing.

10.

Tree trunk --
we are both
naked.

11.

Deep forest --
easy to forget
the way back.

12.

Trees --
brother and sister
refuse to hold hands.

13.

Stumps and trees --
I can't find
my walking stick.

14.

Totem and forest --
the wildfire
closer.

15.

Wood interior --
no direction
but further.

16.

Sea drift at the edge of the Pacific --
a piece of home.

17.

Red cedar --
I hear
my grandmother's name.
